Formosa Plastics Corporation, USA supported the Jackson-Calhoun Counties, Texas Christmas Bird Count (CBC), on Dec. 27, 2021, by providing access to Formosa property and escorts. Pictured left to right are birding experts David Goff, Ron Weeks and Bill Wright surveying the Formosa-Tejano Wetlands.
Local Audubon CBC Compiler Bob Friedrichs said, "184 species were tallied during the Christmas Bird Count in Jackson-Calhoun Counties. Species diversity was close to normal for the count, which is good news, and we found a Yellow-breasted Chat for the first time, a shy bird usually heard not seen. We also found Wild Turkey and Rose-breasted Grosbeak for only the second time. The Formosa-Tejano Wetlands section of the count led the way with 10 bird species exclusive to that site. While the number of passerines was down, overall numbers of individual birds was actually about 25 percent higher than 2019 and 2020.”
Thanks goes out to the 30 volunteer participants who spent sunrise to sunset surveying the Jackson and Calhoun Counties’ 15-mile diameter search area.
